Budapest
Budapest is the capital and most populous city in Hungary and one of the most photogenic cities in Europe. So it’s no surprise I walked the city centre taking photographs until I had blisters on my feet. Budapest is divided into two parts; Pest and Buda, both of which are separated by the river Danube. On the Buda side, you can find Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion, which dates back to the Middle Ages, or around 1493. On the Pest side, you can find the Parliament building, museums, St. Stephen’s Basilica, tons of restaurants and the shopping district, known as Fashion Street. Budapest boasts both Gothic architecture, which can be seen in the Hungarian Parliament Building and Matthias Church; and Renaissance architecture, which can be seen at the Hungarian State Opera House and St. Stephen’s Basilica. Furthermore, during the Turkish occupation of Hungary, between 1541-1686, Islamic culture flourished in Budapest, which resulted in the building of mosques and baths throughout the city. Even today, Budapest is known for its bathhouses, which the city has several for your enjoyment. In fact, Budapest is one of the few places in the world with functioning original Turkish bathhouses dating back to the 16th century. But of course what Budapest is most famous for is the Chain Bridge, which dates back to 1849. Walking the city centre you will surely work up an appetite. Make sure you visit Molnar’s kürtóskalács, for a famous chimney cake. Cinnamon and sugar is the traditional variety, however, they are also available in chocolate and sprinkles, or if you’re feeling extra hungry, you can add gelato to them too. Another must try dish is paprika pasta or for the meat eaters, paprika chicken. Paprika is a staple ingredient used in many Hungarian dishes and throughout the city, you can find many restaurants and cafés offering traditional Hungarian cuisine. Overall, Budapest is a breathtakingly beautiful city with warm, friendly people. English is commonly spoken so you won’t have a problem communicating with locals. Enjoy the city, as she is spectacular!
